DNA Portability

Your DNA is yours.
Forever.

The raw file your lab delivers doesn't belong to a brand — it belongs to you. Take the test once, with any compatible lab, and use the same file across as many analysis services as you want, now and in the future.

The concept

What is genetic test portability?

Unlike a blood test that needs to be redone at every checkup, your DNA is static and digital. Sequencing it once is enough — the resulting file (the "raw data") is universal and can be read by any compatible platform.

Universal

Every regulated lab delivers your raw file in a standard format — TXT, CSV or VCF — that any analysis software knows how to interpret.

Permanent

The DNA you sequenced today is still the same 10 years from now. The file you download now stays valid for the rest of your life.

Yours

Modern data protection laws guarantee the right to portability of your personal data. Download, export, take it anywhere — no lock-in to the original lab.

Retest or port the file?

The traditional path charges you for every new analysis. Portability changes that equation.

Traditional model

Retest for each analysis

  • New kit, new saliva collection, new waiting period
  • Full cost for every different service
  • Your DNA stays locked into the original lab's database
  • Insights limited to that specific report's scope
With portability

One file, infinite analyses

  • Test once, with any compatible lab
  • Upload the same file across as many platforms as you want
  • Reports updated as science evolves
  • Full control over who accesses your data
Hands on

How to export your file from each lab

The process is simple and free. Each lab has a slightly different path.

23andMe

.txt

Go to Settings → Browse Raw Data → Download Raw Data. The file is sent by email as a compressed TXT.

Genera / meuDNA

.txt

In the portal, go to My Account → Raw Data. The file is available for immediate download.

AncestryDNA

.txt

Go to Settings → Download DNA Data and confirm with your password. You'll get an email link with the TXT file.

MyHeritage

.csv

Go to DNA → Manage DNA Kits → Download. The CSV is sent by email with a confirmation link.

Your rights

The law is on your side

Modern privacy laws — GDPR in Europe, LGPD in Brazil, CCPA in California — recognize DNA as sensitive personal data and guarantee the data subject's right to obtain, rectify, erase, and most importantly, port their data to another provider at any time.

In practice: the lab that sequenced your DNA must hand over the raw file. And any compatible platform can use it to generate new analyses — with your consent.

  • Right of access

Know what data the lab holds about you and get a full copy.

  • Right to portability

Move your data to another service provider — free of charge.

  • Right to be forgotten

Request the deletion of your data at any moment.

  • Right to withdraw consent

Revoke data usage authorization with no penalty.

Frequently asked questions

What is the raw data file of my DNA?

It's the direct output of the sequencing or genotyping performed by the lab — a table with hundreds of thousands of genetic variants (SNPs) identified in your DNA. This file is the primary source of your genetic information and any compatible platform can interpret it.

Can I use the same file across multiple services?

Yes. Since DNA doesn't change throughout your life, the same raw file can be uploaded to as many analysis services as you want — today or 10 years from now. You don't need to repeat the test to discover new things about yourself.

Which labs are compatible with helixXY?

23andMe, Genera (meuDNA), AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, and other labs that deliver the raw file in a standard format (TXT, CSV or VCF) are compatible. If your lab isn't on the list, we can usually convert — just send the file.

What do data protection laws say about portability?

Modern data protection regulations (GDPR in Europe, LGPD in Brazil, CCPA in California) guarantee the right to portability of your personal data — including genetic data — to another service provider, upon request. You are the owner and you control your DNA.

Is my data safe with helixXY?

Yes. We apply end-to-end encryption during upload and storage, never share or sell your data, and you can request full deletion at any time — fully compliant with modern data protection laws.

Ready to unlock your DNA?

You already have the file. helixXY turns it into knowledge — now and forever.

Stay updated and never miss anything.
